ECU of de Motor Management Systeem

After some time and early engineering my mate has decided to upgrade the Motor Management System (MMS) from fase II to fase III.
What does this mean? Well, this means many things, such as the ability to save different engine mappings. This means that I will be able to switch easier from gazoline to LPG, or as a matter of fact to Ethanol.

The motorcycle has been test started with brake cleaner to test the trigger wheel. It has started and ran for 20 seconds.  (20 second? yes the radiator was not fit, as the trigger wheel take some of the space from the radiator. Some adjustments will have to be done to the radiator).

On the 25th of May the radiator was fitted.  The trigger wheel fits nicely (pictures to follow).  Now the bike has been started on Gazoline. The bike runs!!! yeahh.

Since we have high expectations and norm, a wide band lambda sensor has replaced the stock sensor.  Now the difficult part is to install a CamShaft sensor.  I am amazed that the BMW does not come with such as sensor.  The wide band Lambda Sensor will allow the MMS to optimise the fuel injection during constant driving situations.  A sort of a learning on the go with target to go for the ideal efficient fuel buring situation.

Next step is to drill a hole in the magnezium head of the cylinders. This will be a one chance deal. If we dont get it right we will have to buy a new cover. This will set us back approximately 200 euros.

Now we can start to install the LPG evaporator. connect the LPG injector, connect the throttle house vacuum hose.  Fill the tank with LPG, load the mapping and start the engine.  If this test works, the bike can than be assembled with the fairing.  It will than look as original as before the project.

When the bike will have been completely assembled the software modifications / tuning can start.  With all sensors in place, we now have to find the best software combination based on the mechanical capacities of the K1200 4 inline block.

A side view of the ongoing master project

Today we discussed the next steps. The project is picking up speed as we need to get some parts lazer/plasma cut for the spagetty inlet manifold. The replacement carburator has been in a ultrasonic bath last week, and looks pretty clean now, hopefully on the inside too.  The effects of the tank look really fantastic. Also we had a triggerwheel cnc frazed in order to better manage the timing.  This due to the higher octane level in LPG 110 octane instead of 95 octane in gazoline. We shall see what the consumption is. For the first time, today, I realised that I have to have the bike inspected TUV. So I need to make an appointment as the certification, in getting a slot a the inspection body could take more than 3 months,

My BMW K1200 Motorbike Project to run on LPG

I would like to start blogging on an odd project. A project which is about getting a motorbike to run on LPG (Liquified Petrolium Gas).
As you are already aware, the Netherlands has the highest gazoline prices, and driving approximately 50,000km a year is an expensive hobby, if you do not have a company car. Also with the over-congested highways which reduces your average speed to less the 50km/h.
With these facts in mijnd as well as the "scruge" factor (as my wife says) I had been contemplating for more than a year and a half about getting a motorbike to run on LPG.  With quite some research on the net, I was conviced that it was possible.  Not beeing the first to attempt an odd project like this and having researched TUV & Road-Acceptance certification/homolgation, I now had to find a bike.

I started looking on several auction sites, and of course have a Yamaha FZ6 with ABS I wanted to absolutely have ABS.  The choice of bikes was quickly reduced to less than 4 models. To spare you ended up bidding on a governement auction for a BMW  K1200RS (actually K1200P) with 100,000 km (ex-highway police bike). This
